As Assemblyman Adam Gray (D-Merced) expressed concern at the actions being taken by the California Fish and Game Commission regarding Bobcat trappings, Chairman Jack Baylis was clear in his disregard by the state legislature, by conveying the message that: it is our view that we can do whatever we want.
On behalf of the majority party and all those members who negotiated this legislation, Asm. Gray explained the purpose and intent of the legislation, emphasizing that any decisions made on this topic was to be based on scientific research and facts.
Baylis retorted that the decision was now in Fish and Game’s hands and that they would be the ones proceeding over the regulations. Furthermore, given the absence of any scientific research or data collection, the commission communicated that they will not wait for this and do not care about what our elected officials wanted or thought they were voting on.
Although, Asm. Gray is a Democrat and his party is in control of the entire state legislature, he and the other elected officials seem helpless in this matter.
