How does this make any sense? Governor Jerry Brown is telling everyone to rip out their lawns, to conserve water and to do their part in this historic drought.
While the message from our State officials is clear, what isn’t clear is that another state agency, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) plans to plant 1 million square miles of freeway landscaping, while we are all supposed to be conserving. The new Caltrans landscape will use 156,000 gallons of water per day.
In addition to all the water use, the plants will be irrigated with sprinklers, not through a drip system.
To add insult to injury, since it is a state agency, the cost of this project and water use will have to be paid using taxpayer money.
How can residents de-program themselves from having a lawn, when our own state government is engaging in these types of hypocritical actions?
