California lawmakers have vowed to battle any new offshore oil and gas drilling off of California’s coastal waters. This is in response to the executive order signed by President Trump that is aimed at expanding oil and gas drilling in environments that were protected by former President Barack Obama. California State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson (Santa Barbara) stated that she was going to introduce legislation that would ban any new oil and gas infrastructure in state waters and on California’s coast. Senator Jackson stated,
For the sake of our environment, our economy and quality of life, the door that Trump wants to open to offshore oil and gas drilling must be closed.
Senator Jackson’s bill will impede the transportation of new gas and oil through coastal waters controlled by the state, which would stop companies from bringing in the new gas and oil from federal waters through California’s controlled waters.
California Attorney General Xavier Becerra also stated that he would fight any new oil and gas drilling off of California’s coastal waters. Becerra stated,
We will vigorously oppose new drilling off the shores of our coast. Instead of taking us backwards, the federal government should work with us to advance the clean energy economy that’s creating jobs, providing energy and preserving California’s natural beauty.
We will have to wait and see what materializes from President Trump’s executive order and the California lawmakers’ fight against the executive order.
