Yesterday marked a fare hike for San Francisco Municipal Railway (Muni) riders that pay cash to ride buses and light trains. The cost increased by a quarter from $2.75 to $3.00, which could affect customers that pay cash for their tickets. According to Muni officials, riders purchasing single-trip fares can use Clipper Cards or the MuniMobile ticketing application instead of using cash, which will cost them 50 cents less at $2.50 per ticket. Apparently, the fare increase is intended to encourage customers to use a more efficient payment method. The reasoning behind this hike is that customers will spend less time boarding at stops, which will speed up the time it takes them to get to their destinations. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the cost of a single-use fare paid with the Clipper Card or MuniMobile App will remain unchanged for the 2020 fiscal year.
