As of September 30, 2024, California’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has removed the requirement for drivers aged 70 and older to take a knowledge test when renewing their licenses. Previously, this test was mandatory once someone’s license expired after their 70th birthday. The DMV’s decision aims to improve customer service and reduce wait times by allowing older drivers to bypass the test if they have no traffic violations on their record.

Although the knowledge test is no longer required, those renewing their licenses must still visit a DMV office for a vision exam and updated photo. 

The change doesn’t apply to first-time drivers or those moving to California who must still take the knowledge test. Moreover, drivers with poor records, such as multiple accidents or a DUI, will need to take the test or complete the DMV’s eLearning course.

The DMV advises older drivers to start the renewal process online to shorten their in-office visits. Some older drivers may have received renewal notices indicating a test is needed, but in such cases, the test requirement will be waived during their office visit.

Statistics indicate that while the crash rate for drivers tends to decrease as they age, those 75 and older have the highest fatality rate in accidents. However, younger drivers aged 16 to 19 remain overrepresented in overall and fatal crashes.
