Kim Kardashian is back with another criminal reform cause. This time, she’s advocating for increased pay for incarcerated firefighters fighting the wildfires in Southern California.
Kim’s efforts align with a new bill introduced by California Assemblymember Isaac Bryan (D-Los Angeles) that aims to increase the wages of inmate firefighters to match the lowest hourly rate earned by professional state firefighters.
Currently, incarcerated firefighters earn between $5.80 and $10.24 per day, plus an additional $1 per hour while actively fighting fires, as reported by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
The proposed legislation would significantly raise compensation for inmate firefighters and add a substantial cost to California’s budget, which is already struggling due to wildfire recovery efforts and expenses.
As wildfires continue to devastate the region, over 900 incarcerated firefighters are among those working to combat the flames.
