California lawmakers are trying to move the state’s presidential primary from June to March starting in 2020. State Senator Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) has authored Senate Bill 568 (SB 568), which would move the presidential primary to the third Tuesday of March. SB 568 would also give the governor the ability to move the presidential primary even earlier in the year if other states hold presidential primaries before California. Secretary of State Alex Padilla states:
By holding our primary earlier, we will ensure that issues important to Californians are prioritized by presidential candidates from all political parties
The month of March is when most states hold their presidential primaries and California hasn’t held a presidential primary in the month of March since 2004. The state’s congressional and legislative primaries would also make the move to the month of March.
