Kaya Clementine Breen, a 20-year-old UCLA student, has filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles County Superior Court against two California doctors, alleging that she was rushed into a gender transition at the age of 12.

Breen claims the process, which included puberty blockers, hormone treatments, and a double mastectomy by the age of 14, caused irreversible harm and was initiated without adequate exploration of her mental health and trauma history.

Breen’s lawsuit also argues that her underlying PTSD, stemming from childhood trauma, was overlooked during her transition process. She began to question her identity after starting therapy as a young adult and has since de-transitioned, improving her mental health. However, she claims the treatments permanently altered her body and left her unable to sing or carry children.

The case has reignited debate about the appropriateness of gender-affirming care for minors.

Critics, including some medical professionals, argue that such treatments are often premature, while supporters emphasize their benefits when properly administered. The lawsuit coincides with broader legal challenges and debates over gender-affirming care nationwide, including a Supreme Court case on state bans.
