The Art Newspaper notes that two climate activists, Donald Zepeda and Jackson Green, have been sentenced to prison for pouring red powder on the display case holding the U.S. Constitution at the National Archives on February 14. Zepeda, from Maryland, received a two-year sentence, while Green, from Utah, was sentenced to 18 months. Both will also serve two years of supervised release and pay $58,607.59 in restitution for the damage caused, though the Constitution itself was unharmed.

Zepeda and Green, members of the climate activist group Declare Emergency, have participated in several high-profile protests.

US District Judge Amy Berman Jackson, who presided over the case, criticized their actions as “unserious, ineffective, and unconnected to the climate emergency.” She emphasized that the sentences were meant to deter future eco-vandalism, calling such acts “misguided” and counterproductive.
