The deadline to submit bids to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection to build prototypes for the border wall has officially ended on Tuesday. The winners of the contracts are expected to be announced by June 1st, but the border agency declined to disclose which companies submitted bids. However, some companies released their plans anyways and some are definitely interesting. One company wants to cover the border wall with solar panels, while another company wants a deck on the border wall so that tourists can gaze at the scenic view of the desert. The border agency has certain specifications that must be met, The Associated Press reports:
Designs must be able to repel pickaxes and sledgehammers for at least an hour and be aesthetically pleasing from the north side. The other specifications, like preventing people from digging tunnels beneath the wall, will eliminate some designs immediately. Winners must also have done border security or similar projects worth $25 million or more in the past five years.
Some of the design ideas are a bit strange, but it’s good that some companies are thinking unconventionally to build something as controversial as the border wall. If the border wall is going to be built, why not make it more aesthetically pleasing to view or more practical?
