Talk about terrible timing.
The day after a wild animal ripped Demi Lovoto’s pet dog apart at her Los Angeles home, a pack of B-List celebrities joined by career government parasite, L.A. City Councilman Paul Koretz, launched a “Ban The Trap†billboard and social media campaign to support a proposal before the California Fish & Game Commission to ban bobcat trapping statewide.
According to TMZ, “Demi Lovoto’s dog Buddy was ripped apart by a coyote … and she’s the one who made the gruesome discovery. TMZ has learned Demi’s dog was torn to shreds Sunday …  after a coyote wandered onto the backyard of her LA home.â€
Coyotes aren’t Lassies. Bobcats aren’t Garfields.
Wildlife biologists officials across the United States note “few predators other than cougars and humans are able to kill an adult bobcat.†Bobcats are fierce animals and have been know to attack household pets and humans. Despite reaching a height of about a mid-size dog, they hunt animals like deer and can fight off coyotes. Because of their ferocity it is illegal to own or posses a bobcat as a pet.
Legal trapping is a centuries old practice that helps manage wildlife populations and protect the public. The California Department of Fish & Wildlife issues all trapping licenses in the state, where the annual bobcat trapping season runs from Nov. 24 – January 31; the season can also end sooner once a certain number of trappings have been made.
Under California law, anyone seeking to trap a bobcat is required to take a California Department of Fish and Wildlife License examination. “The examination is designed to test one’s knowledge of furbearing and nongame mammal natural history and associated health concerns and diseases, and sections in Title 14, California Code of Regulations (CCR), and the Fish and Game Code that address trapping and the take of furbearing and nongame mammals.â€
Current California bobcat trappings laws offers the California State Fish & Wildlife Commission the ability to issue trapping licenses and limit the number of bobcats trapped to manage top-level predators.
Before Koretz and his naïve cult of b-list friends continue proliferating their ignorant media campaign, they should educate themselves about what bobcats can actually do:
