California State Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil has secured $40 million in funding to modernize infrastructure and improve emergency response capabilities at the state’s 78 fairgrounds. Fairgrounds play a crucial role during crises, serving as emergency shelters and centers for relief efforts.

“California’s fairgrounds are more than just venues for entertainment—they are lifelines during times of crisis,” said Senator Alvarado-Gil. “They provide shelter for families and animals, store supplies, and deliver essential support when disaster strikes. Unfortunately, many of these facilities have been neglected for years. With this funding, we can ensure they are ready when our communities need them most.”

While fairgrounds have historically relied on horse racing licensing fees and state budget allocations, they encountered a revenue shortfall when these fees were redirected to the general fund in 2009, followed by the elimination of supplemental payments in the 2011–2012 state budget. The loss of these funds resulted in deferred maintenance, including crucial repairs to restrooms, HVAC systems, roofs, and other vital facilities.

This investment addresses overdue maintenance and reinforces the significance of fairgrounds as vital community assets.
