This past week, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning to Tom’s of Maine after an inspection of their Sanford, Maine, facility revealed significant violations, including harmful bacteria and mold-like substances.

The FDA’s inspection uncovered Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a bacterium that can cause infections in the blood, lungs, and urinary tract, in the water used to manufacture Tom’s Simply White Clean Mint Paste. Additionally, Ralstonia insidiosa, associated with blood infections and pneumonia, was detected in the facility’s water supply.

A batch of Wicked Cool! Anti-cavity Toothpaste was found to contain Paracoccus yeei, linked to various infections, including conjunctivitis and bloodstream infections.

The FDA also observed a black, mold-like substance near manufacturing equipment and powder residues close to areas where Tom’s Silly Strawberry Anti-cavity toothpaste is produced. These findings indicate lapses in the facility’s maintenance and sanitation protocols.

Tom’s of Maine emphasized that they have always tested finished products before distribution and remain confident in the safety and quality of their toothpaste. They have engaged water specialists to evaluate their systems, implemented additional safeguards to comply with FDA standards, and are making capital investments to upgrade the Sanford plant’s water system.
