Being a journalist in Mexico is a hazardous career choice for those that choose to pursue that occupation. ABC News reports:
The [Center to Protect Journalists] CPJ has identified at least 38 journalists who have been killed in Mexico since 1992 with the motive confirmed to be related to their work.
The March 23rd death of journalist Miroslava Breach, who was gunned down outside her house in Ciudad Juárez, persuaded Oscar Cantú Murguía the owner of Norte, a newspaper in the city, to shut down his newspaper publication. Oscar feared that he would be putting the people that work for the newspaper in danger and that his own life would also be in danger if the publication continued to operate. Many newspapers and journalists are often threatened for exposing corruption in Mexico. There are very little protections for journalists in Mexico and Oscar felt that his publication could no longer operate in a safe and free environment.
