A man was beaten up in the Del Paso Heights neighborhood in Sacramento for not cooperating with a police officer. Nandi Cain Jr. was stopped by a police officer for jaywalking illegally, even though Cain apparently crossed the street legally. Cain had walked through an intersection that did not have a marked crosswalk and the officer sought to stop him for illegally jaywalking. According to various groups, Cain did in fact cross through the street legally and the officer was mistaken. Chris Cochran, Assistant Director for Marketing and Public Affairs for the California Office of Traffic Safety, stated:
Any place there is an intersection there is also a crosswalk implied whether it is marked with stripes and lines or not. If there are not stripes and it is at a corner or intersection, it is still legally a crosswalk.
After a verbal exchange between Cain and the officer, Cain was pushed to the ground and punched in the face almost 18 times by the officer, which left Cain with a concussion and a broken nose.
This was a very unfortunate incident that should not have escalated to violence and we will have to wait and see what an investigation into this incident finds.
