The 1,000 highest-paid city, county and special district workers in the Sacramento region earned an average of $172,000 in wages during 2012, roughly triple the area’s median household income, according to new state data.

The general manager of the Sacramento Municipal Utility District topped the list, earning $439,000 in wages and another $93,000 in retirement and health benefits, according to the figures, released this week by the State Controller’s Office.
